Tips for a healthy and risk-free suntan

For a uniform and intense yet safe tan, avoiding the risks of sunburns or more serious long-term damage, it is wise to follow some tips:

1. Use protective creams with an adequate sun protection factor, especially on the parts of the body exposed to the sun, and repeat the application frequently.

2. Limit the exposure when the UV index is high (around noon) or stay as much as possible in the shade. 50% of UVB rays reach the Earth between 11.00 am and 03.00 pm.

3. Solar radiations reach the retina, so protect your eyes with sunglasses equipped with UV absorbing lenses: this way, we significantly reduce damage to the eyes and to the orbit area extremely sensitive
to UV rays.

4. Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration.

5. Do not use perfumes and deodorants which could cause photo-sensitization.

6. Even in the water you are exposed to UV radiations: 95% of UV rays penetrate the water; furthermore, the surface of the water considerably reflects the sun rays, therefore it is good to protect yourself during baths with water resistant sun products.

7. When choosing a sunscreen product, start with a high SPF for the first days of exposure, then lower it in the following ones.

8. UV radiations pass through the clouds; therefore, you should adequately protect the skin even when the sky is cloudy and it’s not excessively hot. UV rays increase with altitude.

9. Under the beach umbrella you are reached by more than 50% of all UV rays.

10. Remember that self-tanning products usually do not protect against UV rays.

11. Children, especially under three years of age, should not be exposed to the sun without clothesand hat and, in any case, never to direct sun.
